Help is most needed for the following 4 events:

Book Fair: Each year we have two Book Fairs that run for one week. Parents and kids can come and explore and purchase books and school supplies. Help children with selecting and purchasing books or with set up or take down. [Time frame- Dec  and May]

Fall Festival: Help welcome the Fern family back to school at this fun filled festival in October.  Helpers needed to run booths/activities as well as with set-up and tear down. Come work for a shift and then meet up with your friends from Fern.  It’s a great opportunity for parents who can’t volunteer during school hours! [Time frame- Sept/Oct for event planning/promotion, end of October for event day]

Fern Fun Run: Our annual spring fundraiser will be held in February! Come out and cheer the kids on! Jobs include -- set up, water table, attaching lap cards, counting laps, and clean up.  Last year we raised over $10,000! [Time frame- Jan for event planning/promotion, Feb for event day]

Yearbook: Do you love to take pictures of your child at school? Help create a page in the yearbook for your child’s class, or join the yearbook team by taking pictures at one of our many events. You can become even more involved and help create the yearbook!  

Other activities to participate in:

Beautification/Clean-up: Help clean up our school and make it a beautiful place for our children to learn! We tackle some of those bigger jobs that just don’t seem to get done. Help keep our school beautiful and safe! [Time frame- year round for individual projects, participate in just one or all]

: This is a district wide bike safety event where students get tested on agility and bike safety. Set up and monitor tests for the students. [Time frame- March/April]

Blue Ribbon Week: Blue Ribbon week is our tribute to the heroes of our community. Help teach the children about our valuable public safety workers and military through different activities. [Time frame- May]

Emergency Kits:  Each TUSD student is required to have an emergency kit in the classroom.  TUSD prohibits the use of homemade kits, therefore, the PTA coordinates the ordering of the kits for all new students.  The kits are good for 5 years and then need a refresher.  Help take the orders for new and refresher kits and then distribute the kits.  [Time frame – Sept – Oct]

: PTA honors the people who volunteer in our community.  Help organize the nomination and selection process for this award. [Time frame- Jan/Feb]

Hospitality:  If you love to entertain then this is for you!  Buy/make and organize refreshments at some of our many events, such as back to school night. [Time frame- year round, participate for just one or all events]

Red Ribbon Week: Held October 20-24, Red Ribbon Week is dedicated to drug awareness. Help with activities that promote drug awareness to our students. [Time frame- Oct]

: Help organize the PTA art contest! Create flyers, gather student projects, gather judges, announce winners and distribute prizes. Most can be done from your home with the exception of the judging. Keep the arts alive in our school! [Time frame- Sept - Nov]

Scholarship – Select from outstanding high school students for a Fern Elementary Scholarship [Time frame – Feb]

Staff appreciation: Show the staff at Fern how much we appreciate their hard work and dedication to our children at this event held in February for a whole week. We need volunteers to bring potluck style dishes, decorate the staff lounge, and gather goodies for the staff. [Time frame- February]

Student Spirit Wear: Help kids get in the school spirit. Coordinate the set up of an online store and communicate ordering dates to students and parents. Coordinate delivery to classroom when the orders arrive.  [Time frame- throughout the year]

TUSD School District requires the following documents when applying to volunteer:

• Drivers License or ID
• A completed tuberculosis health screener signed by a medical professional within the last 4 years.
• Your COVID-19 vaccination record OR Negative COVID test (PCR or rapid tests are acceptable).
• If you are not vaccinated, you must present a negative COVID test to the school each week that you will volunteer.

Please submit your application at least a week prior to your volunteer event.

Parents/Guardians at Fern Elementary

Sometimes a need arises for a parent or guardian to come to the Fern campus. Sometimes students leave homework, lunch or sweaters at home. At other times a student may need to leave early for a doctor’s appointment or other reason. TUSD (º£ÌÄÖ±²¥ Unified School District) requires all visitors to first check in at the front office.

Visitors must sign in and out.

Additionally, some parents or family members may want to help in a child’s classroom, go on field trips with the children or help with a PTA event on campus like the Fun Run. In order to be on campus during the school day, parents or family members must complete a volunteer application and have a current negative TB test on file.  After you turn these in, TUSD will run a background check and approve you for on campus activities. The front office will be notified when you are cleared. Please make sure to check in with the school office first when you arrive on campus to volunteer.

In order to assist in your efforts to volunteer at school, Accesa Health has once again agreed to provide a 25% discount to Fern parents for TB tests. The  discount lowers the total cost to you from $40 to just $30. Accesa Health has also generously offered to donate a portion of the proceeds back to our PTA to directly benefit students at Fern Elementary. Other options for TB Testing

You may be able to get a test from your regular health care provider. Please contact them to find out if they have TB tests available.

If you do not have a regular health care provider, contact the Health Consumer Center of Los Angeles at 1-800-896-3203, or visit www.ladhs.org and click on "Search for Clinics" on the right.
